Career Opportunities in Canada Hotels
The tourism industry is one of the major earners for Canada, in fact, Nova Scotia reports that it is a 1.8 billion dollar per year industry. This comes as no surprise, however, since Canada is known for some of the most beautiful sceneries and opportunities for tourists to experience amazing dining, accommodation and activities for thrill and adventure.
The Canadian tourism industry is booming especially in hotels which in many ways are central to the experience of all tourists. What attracts most potential employees seems to be the fact that while qualifications are a part of the job applications they don’t matter as much as in other industries. However, this fact also makes it more competitive since the skills required for these jobs can be potentially gained by anyone. Above all else, most hotels employ people who will be effective in the jobs that they are assigned. Hotels require problem-solving skills, an ability to interact with strangers, loyalty and flexibility for working hours. Employees also need to bring passion and professionalism to their job. Whilethe skills are easy to implement they can be difficult to gain. It is recommended that initially new employees seek advice from and learn from the example of older more experienced employees since they would be better suited to explain the inner workings of the industry which are necessary to learn.
Initially, most people start out as luggage hands etc. However, there is a lot of room for growth in this industry which also leads to a raise in salary and benefits. While initial salaries may range from 15,000 CAD to 25,000 CAD promotions are always happening in the hotel industry. Employees can be promoted to positions such as executive housekeeper and general manager which earn around 38,000 CAD and over 60,000 CAD respectively while hourly wages start from 12 CAD per hour and can reach till 20 CAD. Along with that, hotel employees also enjoy other perks such as insurance and retirement benefits, pension plans and employee discounts.
Nearly 20 million tourists visited Canada in 2016; this represents that the tourism industry of Canada is always growing and doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. This means that hotels will always remain profitable businesses and jobs in hotels will always be available for those willing to work. However, they require skills that need to be carefully cultivated.
